                                                                         Introductory
In the 1960s and early 1970s, the USA went through several phases of change and renewal. New governmental regemes were created, three presidential terms were served, and many historical movements for rights and liberties took place. African Americans across the country protested for the same equal rights as White Americans. Women of both ethnicities protested for equality in voting rights and other unfair governmental systems. The Vietnam War also took place and the fight against Communism was very real. The threat it imposed upon the United States government was boundless and was also far reaching to all ways of life throughout the entire country. The United States went through tragedy, turmoil, and triumph all through the 1960s and 70s. It happened to the Upper Class, the Middle Class, the Lower Class, the Elderly, the Middle Aged, and the Young, all receiving the same hardships and achievements in their own ways.

Interview With Grandpa Sorensen

Social Science Project with Papa

My grandfather, David E.Sorensen, was in his mid twenties and mid thirties during 1950-70. He was in the US Army serving in the Korean War in the late 1950s and after we was dismissed from his labour, he went to college in the early 1960’s. In the 60’s he and his wife, Verla, and their children lived in Salt Lake City Utah. Then in 1969 he and my grandmother and their children moved to the San Gabriel Valley in Southern California. While they were living in Utah, Salt Lake City and surrounding cities grew very rapidly. The reason Utah populated so quickly was World War II and Korean War veterans were coming to the University of Utah and other educational institutions on the resources of the GI Bill. When he moved to California, there was also a large influx in Hispanic and Asian immigrants. Like wise, many people also came from all over the United States, such as the Mid West and South West, for the new jobs and spectacular weather.
The society David and his family lived in was very open in both states. Television was just developing and he knew many people who did not own tvs in their homes. Many people were very leary of the new twchnology and use of watching television. He knew that because children would come over to his home to watch tv daily. His children went to public schools. They lived in a very safe community. They used public or private transportation very rarely because he and his family could walk to almost any destination in their community, partly because it was so safe and schools and churches, and shopping were within walking distance.
David and his family thought the State government, under the direction of governor Ronald Reagan, was very successful. The city governments were also very practical and beneficial to the public. The government was very responsive and helpful to needs of the people. However, in south Los Angeles, the police men were accused of racism towards other ethnicities, which caused racial riots. These riots did not directly affect David and his family, but there was much discussion about the problems of how the big city governments and the police forces were handling racial issues. My grandfather felt the riots would have been avoided if the police and city officials would have been more responsive to the needs of the people in the communities of south Los Angeles.

Vietnam Political Cartoon

In this cartoon, the artist is depicting how the USA was being pulled deeper and deeper into the war against Communism in Southern Asia. Many people were against the US joining the war in Vietnam because of this exact reason: they worried that the US would become way to involved in other countries priorities that didn’t matter to the welfare of the United States. Although many people did not want to engage in the Vietnam War, many politicians believed if we could help create Vietnam a democratized country, we could have more foreign resources for trade and military alliances in time of war. Some of these goals were accomplished, while others crumbled and fell apart as the US eventually pulled all military forces out of Vietnam. Even though the US did gain some resources from fighting in the Vietnam War, ultimately it was a waste of lives and dragged the US into the problems of Asia, just as this picture displays, that the government should not have engaged in.

Poem: Newspapers

        Newspapers

The newspaper is read by Whites and by My kind alike.
They read it for entertainment, jobs, and for other nation insights.
Each has other uses for it besides the morning read.
My kind uses it as am informer about those who know how to lead.
Such as Martin Luther King, our equal rights torchbearer,
Who believes all men are equal, that the Black man should be treated fairer.
The White man, though, uses the paper and ink in a contradicting way.
They put it to work, acting as if they had had that paper for weeks, not only a mere day.
They use it for fetch, or a job needed to be done with paint,
Or for their animals, where they can eat, sleep, and urinate.
In the end, the newspaper becomes nothing but trash,
Or it is burned to start a fire, and quickly turned to ash.
The newspaper is not the only thing treated this way by the White man.
My kind receives the same treatment, as if we are of same brand.
They treat us like trash and look down upon us.
At our sight, they command us to work, calling us “ Stupid Nigger” or “Dirty Cuss.”
The make us work, all day and all night.
As if we are machines, with no emotion or life.
But let me tell you, we are full of life!
We may be of a lower class, or of a different race,
But we still shine! We shine full of light.
So although the newspaper is read by Whites and by My kind alike,
Each race has its methods to it, completely different but very concise.

Song: "For What Its Worth"

“For What It’s Worth”
There’s something happening here
But what it is ain’t exactly clear
There’s a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware

I think it’s time we stop
Children, what’s that sound?
Everybody look-what’s going down?

There’s battle lines being drawn
Nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong
Young people speaking’ their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind

It’s time we stop
Hey, what’s that sound?
Everybody look-what’s going down

What a field day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly saying, “hooray for our side”

It’s time we stop
Children what’s that sound?
Everybody look-what’s going down?

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you’re always afraid
Step out of line, the men come and take you away

We better stop
Hey what’s that sound?
Everybody look-what’s going down?

We better stop
Hey what’s that sound?
Everybody look-what’s going down?

We better stop
Hey what’s that sound?
Everybody look-what’s going down?

We better stop
Hey what’s that sound?
Everybody look-what’s going down?

President Johnson's Great Society

President Johnson’s Great Society

Today was a life changing day. My parents were out on the new system of social security and medical service called Medicare. This new order will guarantee my parents security and medical needs to them whenever needed. This isn’t just for my parents though; all citizens of the United States that apply for this will be guaranteed this new right. President LBJ and his team are so amazing. This new program will change the lives of Americans forever. Medicare is not the only new installment into our United States government. President Johnson asked and received approval from Congress to create new projects on attacking diseases, conservation, fights against poverty, urban renewal and many more achievements that ill benefit the public of this fine country. Home projects are not the only thing being brained stormed by the government. The President has many ideas on how to increase our explorations and discoveries in space. How amazing it would be if more men and women could be sent into space and return with new information about the galaxy and universe we live in.
Although all of these new achievements and desires are very exciting and would be beneficial to our country, we have bigger problems abroad we need to take care of first. The war against Communism in Vietnam is getting out of control and needs to stop. Too many young boys are leaving their families to go and fight a war that doesn’t have any affect on how the nation is ran. The only logical reasoning behind it in my eyes is that this War would open up new trading opportunities and create new alliances in South Asia. These cravings from the government are not worth  the death of our young boys. The death number increases ever day of the weak. The anti-war chant “Hey, hey LBJ, how many boys have you killed today?” is becoming more and more sung throughout the entire country more and more often. In my dear opinion, the Vietnam War is a waste of time and lives. Our government has amazing intensions and does a stellar job at protecting and running the place we call home, they just sometimes get caught up in events and projects that amount to nothing. We live in a very fascinating and magnificent country, but magnificent and flaunting problems are unescapable and unavoidable by our government.

The Watergate Scandal

In the Watergate Scandal of 1972-1974, President Nixon and his Presidency Administration create an illegal espionage. He and his Administration were very worried about the upcoming election and wanted to make sure the Republican party would win the nomination. To increase their chances of winning, they tapped into the Democratic Party’s headquarters at the Watergate Hotel. To do this they tapped into the office’s phones and stole top-secret documents. Through out the campaign for the presidency, the Nixon Administration used the documents they had illegally aquirred to dismantle the Democratic Party. Information started adding up to the fact that the Democratic Party’s private information was being stolen. Then the thieves were uncovered.  During a tap-in to the Democratic secret conversations, the wiring of the microphones failed. On June 17th, a group of the Nixon Administration tried to break into the Democratic office, but were turned into the police when one of the hotel’s guards noticed the break-in. The burglary did not immediately connect to the President’s Administration, but as time went on and as puzzle pieces were put together, President Nixon and his Administration were charged espionage. President Nixon denied the claims against him as being related to the burglary when the public and Democratic Party started questioning and charging him with being part of the scandal. As time went on though, and the facts started adding up, President Nixon was charged by the Senate with illegal conduct against his opposing governmental Party and demanded the information on the tapes that were gained through the wire tapping. Finally in March of 1974, after The Supreme Court ordered him to turn over all the tapes he had aquired, Nixon’s criminal cover-up began falling apart. After all the information on the tapes was carefully examined, the Senate was given the opportunity to vote for impeachment against the President. Knowing that he would be charged undoubtedly with impeachment, President Nixon became the first and only President to resigned the Presidence before his term was up. After Nixon resigned, many of his advisors and other members of his Administration were either released from their duty or resigned themselves. In the end of the entire scheme, Nixon and his Administration suffered the consequences of cheating and ultimately lost the Presidence of the United States of America.
